Instructor Bio - Mike Tashjian

Mike Tashjian
Music has been very important to Mike from an early age. His first musical experiences came from the piano, which he began playing at age 8 and later from the clarinet. After being exposed to the music of The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, Mike was inspired to begin playing the guitar at age 11. He started taking lessons from a local music store and began performing in middle school jazz band and local rock bands.

Through high school Mike continued to play in jazz bands where he received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award along with a scholarship to a Summer Jazz Symposium at Illinois State University. He performed at various local venues in the Detroit area with an original rock/blues trio and continued to study jazz guitar. He also played clarinet in symphony band and percussion in marching band through his senior year.

After high school Mike moved to St. Paul to attend McNally Smith College of Music to work towards a Bachelor's degree in guitar performance. He has completed three years of study and has performed with various R&B/Funk, Jazz and blues ensembles. He has been awarded the Mike Elliot Scholarship for excellence in guitar and also the Founder's scholarship from McNally Smith. He currently plays in an R&B/Funk cover band and an original Jazz group. Mike hopes to be able to share his passion for music with as many people as he can through performing and teaching.
